School: a time for development
No. 2 (2000)In this second volume of the journal *Stylus*, themed "School: A Time for Elaboration," the publication establishes itself as a product of the *Espaço-Escola* (School-Space) of the *Associação Fóruns do Campo Lacaniano* (AFCL). It focuses on a rigorous, collective discussion regarding the construction of a novel community for analytical work. Founding a School of Psychoanalysis capable of welcoming and sustaining the analytical act requires recognizing that a "time for elaboration" is logically necessary to debate its principles, foundations, and mechanisms—thereby setting in motion social bonds oriented by the discourse of the analyst, while rejecting the hierarchy inherent in the discourse of the master.
This edition brings together contributions from various authors exploring transference, training, and the School’s cardinal mechanisms: the *cartel*—a mode of transmission and elaboration that dismantles "mass" effects—and the *pass*—conceived as a means to interrogate the transition from analysand to analyst and to position the analyst’s desire at the very heart of the institution. Through theoretical reflections, critical essays on the history of the psychoanalytic movement, and accounts of clinical and institutional experience, this volume reaffirms the commitment to building a "School of analysands"—one that remains open to the *real* and is guided by the crucial questions bequeathed by Freud and Lacan.

The *passe*: a Brazilian experience
No. 1 (2000)Becoming a psychoanalyst is not a professional choice, but rather a turning point or transition that occurs within an analytical process—a shift that can be verified through an institutional mechanism Lacan termed the "pass" (*passe*). Sharing its name with the very moment of transition that marks the end of an analysis, the "pass" seeks to address the recurring question, "What is an analyst?" It places at the heart of the School the verification of the emergence of a specific function and a unique desire—the "desire of the analyst"—in which the private sphere erupts into the public realm through the production of singular knowledge regarding one’s own analysis.
In this inaugural first volume of the journal *Stylus* (April 2000), themed "The Pass: A Brazilian Experience," the publication brings together the work of the Critical Commission on the Pass, as well as discussions held at the National Forum of the Lacanian Field in Belo Horizonte. This edition critically examines the deviations and the political and institutional effects resulting from the so-called "pass at the entry to the School"—implemented before the conclusion of the transference—while questioning the conditions under which the pass takes place and the possibility of the "desire of the analyst" emerging prior to the end of an analysis. By featuring sections dedicated to transference, the "pass cartel," the "passer" (*passador*), and clinical practice, this issue presents—openly and for the first time—testimonies regarding the experience of the pass, while also disseminating the guidelines and statutes of the newly founded Association of Forums of the Lacanian Field (AFCL).
