The ethical status of psychoanalytic supervision
from pedagogy to operative non-knowledge

The text addresses the ethical status of psychoanalytic supervision from a Lacanian orientation, situating it within the field of operative non-knowledge, away from pedagogy. Psychoanalytic supervision inscribes its mark when it reads, retroactively, the effects of the analytic act and brings back into focus the analyst’s position in the treatment. Along this path, three zones of reading are proposed – pre-text, text, and post-text – articulated with the logical moments of seeing, understanding, and concluding. This theoretical-clinical architecture privileges the stumbling of speech, the cut, and punctuation as operators that disrupt meaning and allow the point of the subject’s inscription to be located. In this crossroads-field, psychoanalytic supervision follows an ethical orientation that disarms buffer-knowledge and bars the return of the master. Rather than transmitting technique, it brings into play the rectification of the analyst’s position, the analyst’s desire, and the sustaining of the place of cause from which the act produces its effects.
