No. 8 (2004): Subject and Jouissance

View No. 8 (2004): Subject and Jouissance

Writing about clinical practice and interrogating various discursive forms entails confronting the contingency and the impossibility inherent in the act of writing itself. This is because *jouissance*—which is forbidden to the speaking being—resists total capture by the signifier, rendering failure a necessary condition for the process of elaboration. In psychoanalysis, the subject is not a substance endowed with specific qualities, but rather an effect determined by language. Yet, *jouissance*—real and unassimilable—manifests as pure effectivity within symptoms, revealing both the traces that language attempts to name and the non-signifiable portion that defines the unique mode of *jouissance* for each "speaking being" (*parlêtre*).

In this 8th volume of the journal *Stylus*—a biannual publication by the Association of Forums of the Lacanian Field (AFCL) dedicated to the theme "Subject and *Jouissance*"—psychoanalysts and researchers explore how clinical practice operates upon the real. Through theoretical essays on logical temporality and Borromean knot theory, critical reflections on science and capitalist discourse, and clinical investigations into pain, psychosomatic phenomena, hysteria, and obsessive neurosis, this issue examines the status of the body and the function of the symptom. In doing so, it upholds the possibility for the subject to take analytical responsibility for that which determines them.
