No. 9 (2004): Trauma and fantasy
The concept of trauma permeates the entirety of Freud’s work, enabling psychoanalysis to establish the notion of "psychic reality" over and above the mere factuality of events. In investigating the causes of symptoms, Freud encountered a pathogenic core that resists both verbalization and deciphering—an ineffable point of fixation that functions as a fundamental, primordial structure in the constitution of the subject. Reinterpreted by Lacan through the neologism *troumatisme*, trauma emerges as the inaugural cut brought about by the impact of language upon a living being—a hole in the Real, around which the unconscious and its signifiers are organized. Faced with this encounter with a lack in the Other, fantasy arises as a neurotic response that veils anxiety and provides stability to the subject, maintaining their homeostasis through the *objet petit a*, without, however, erasing the fixity of the Real.
In this 9th volume of the journal *Stylus*—a biannual publication of the Association of Forums of the Lacanian Field (AFCL) dedicated to the theme "Trauma and Fantasy"—psychoanalysts and researchers explore the diverse interpretations that this subject invites within both theory and practice. Bringing together theoretical essays, debates on the *passe*, discussions regarding contemporary discourse, and clinical illustrations—including new perspectives on the case of the Wolf Man and the nature of masochism—this edition interrogates the status of the "One," the transformations of the "primal scene," and the function of fantasy. It examines how the analytical experience allows the subject to circumscribe the impossible and invent new ways of navigating trauma.
