No. 10 (2005): Knowing-how-to-deal with the real of clinical practice

View No. 10 (2005): Knowing-how-to-deal with the real of clinical practice

In *The Future Prospects of Psycho-Analytic Therapy* (1910), Freud emphasized that psychoanalysis must address the problems arising from the discontent within civilization in any given era, seeking a "know-how" (*savoir-faire*) that acknowledges and engages with the "real" involved, in order to keep its clinical practice current. Confronted with the irreducible manifestations of the symptom, the impact of trauma, and the emergence of anxiety—an exceptional affect that does not deceive and remains tethered to the "real"—psychoanalytic practice rejects hegemonic and normalizing responses. Instead, it upholds the function of transference to guide the subject toward the elaboration of their suffering and the delineation of their being-of-jouissance (*être de jouissance*).

In this 10th volume of the journal *Stylus*—a biannual publication of the Association of Forums of the Lacanian Field (AFCL)—dedicated to the theme "Know-how with the 'real' in clinical practice," psychoanalysts and researchers explore the ethical and practical challenges involved in conducting the analytic cure. Through lectures, theoretical articles, clinical discussions, and dialogues with the field of art, this issue examines the trajectories of anxiety, fantasy, and the *objet petit a*. It delves into how the "real" is addressed within psychosomatic conditions, the vicissitudes of hysteria, anorexia, and alcoholism, as well as the transmission and formalization of the analytic apparatus.
