Abstract

Madame Bovary or Emma Bovary is the protagonist of the novel of the same name, written by Flaubert, which took five years to build. She presents the characteristics of the 19th century bourgeois woman, quite common to be observed in cases of hysteria. After the role of daughter, the woman ascended socially only through marriage and, even so, she should obey the ideals of femininity, with care for the home and motherhood. The aim of this work, however, is not to diagnose Emma Bovary as hysterical, but rather to approximate what is reported in this literary work about this woman's life with what Freud's studies have enabled us to understand about hysteria.
